Swine flu? A cold? [11 Nov 2009|05:23am]

pregnant

[aminwillreverse]
I'm an elementary school teacher, and yesterday about 30 students in our school were sent home with "flu-like" symptoms (runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever). For the past 2 days I've had the runny nose, cough and sore throat, and after making it though the day with Parent Teacher Conferences last night I let my school know that I would not be in today. I'm debating if I need to see or contact a doctor or my midwives. I haven't had a fever at all (holding steady between 98.4 and 98.8), and neither did the kids that were sent home... which makes me feel that this might just be my school overreacting to a seasonal cold. My symptoms don't make me miserable... I don't have that heady "sick" feeling and, if I wasn't pregnant, I would have popped a DayQuil and gone in to teach, no question. Anyone had experience with "real" H1N1?

I have an appt. to get the vaccine next Tuesday.... I'm currently at 8w6d

Thanks!

There are two hospitals in my area that my doctor will deliver at. They both operate very differently.

One only does low risk deliveries (babies at least 37 weeks gestation with no abnormal test results) and does not have a nicu. They usually don't have very many patients at a time (my son was born at this hospital, and he was one of only 4 babies there) so there is a lot of individual attention. They do almost everything that needs to be done to the baby right in your room, and you have the option of going with your baby for the things that can't be done in your room. (first bath, and pediatrician check up is all I remember). They have an optional nursery that you can choose to use if you want to, but there is no pressure.

You deliver in the same room that you spend the rest of your stay in. It is a pretty decent room and guaranteed to be private. Fathers are allowed to spend the night, and they are not very strict on their visiting rules as long as the mother is happy.

I am planning to deliver at this hospital again.

Apparently this hospital has a somewhat uncomfortable waiting room. All I have gotten to hear since I told my family that I was delivering at the same hospital as last time is how uncomfortable the waiting room is. It is really starting to annoy me. If they don't want to hang out in the waiting room then they don't have to, they can stay home until the baby is born.

The other hospital takes your baby out of the room for everything and sometimes keeps them for hours at a time to do something that should only take a few minutes because they are so busy and crowded. The recovery rooms aren't private, and fathers usually aren't allowed to spend the night after the baby is born. (They will only make an exception if you end up in a room without a roommate). They are a lot more crowded because they have a nicu so a lot of people feel safer delivering there. My stepsister and cousin both delivered in this hospital, and every time I visited either of them the baby was in the nursery for some reason, and it would usually take them a pretty long time to get the baby back.

This hospital has a very comfortable waiting room. My family thinks I should deliver here so that I won't inconvenience them with an uncomfortable waiting room.

I can guarantee that while I am in labor, I will be way more uncomfortable than any of them no matter how hard the chairs are, so they can just suck it up and deal with it or they can stay home. I am not choosing a hospital based on the waiting room, there are other things I think are more important, like being able to actually see my baby, and being able to have my husband spend the night.

WDYT of Hermione?

Still too Harry Potter...? Not that it bothers me, but my friends would NEVER believe I liked the name from the Shakespeare play and not HP... seeing as though I'm the biggest Potter fan one could ever imagine.

Shame shame. Oh well. I still love it. ;)

Bloody smell during period sex [10 Nov 2009|11:28pm]

vaginapagina

[ms_octopus_lady]
Soooo...my boyfriend and I are in a long distance relationship. I was supposed to fly out to see him yesterday, but he got picked for jury duty and we canceled. We decided that not this weekend, but next weekend, I'll come visit.

The bad news is, I'll probably be having my period that weekend. I really want to get laid, but the problem is that my boyfriend and I don't like period sex because it smells. Like...you know, blood. And if my boyfriend were Edward Cullen, I'm sure that'd be just fine, but he's not (fortunately). Neither he nor I like that smell, and considering I will be visiting him on my heaviest days, it will be very, very present.

Is the only way to fix this by having sex in the shower (something we've tried and failed miserably at, multiple times)? Because if so, then I shall be very disappointed. And I can't use an Instead cup because we've tried them before and they just...are super uncomfortable during sex and I also have an IUD.

Suggestions?

In a follow up from Woman Faces 15 Years for Cutting Line at Walmart, KKK Involved.

Judge denies Ellis' request for Sokoloff's recusal, prosecutor later voluntarily steps down and files for appointment of new attorney

Tuesday, November 10, 2009 ~ Updated 1:25 PM
A motion filed in a Dunklin County courtroom brings a new twist to the case against Heather Ellis, a case that has garnered national media attention.
Ellis, an African-American woman from Kennett, is charged in connection with an incident at the Kennett Walmart in 2007 during which she was arrested and charged with two counts of the Class C felony assault on a law enforcement officer, one count of the Class B misdemeanor peace disturbance and one count of the Class A misdemeanor resisting arrest. Ellis was charged as a result of a scuffle that broke out in a checkout line at the store, following Ellis being accused by associates employed by Walmart of cutting in line.

The motion in question, filed by Ellis' attorney on November 2, involves Ellis' legal representation requesting Dunklin County Prosecuting Attorney Stephen Sokoloff to recuse himself from the case.

Sokoloff is accused by Ellis' camp of "...making extrajudicial comments that have a substantial likelihood of heightening public condemnation of the accused."

According to the three-page document, Sokoloff replied to a story written on the case by Michael I. Niman of Progressive Populist.

The article, entitled "Felony charge for cutting in line while black in Missouri," tells Ellis' side of the story in which she claims to have been racially targeted by both Walmart employees and Kennett police officers. The story also accuses a police officer of intimidating her family with a Ku Klux Klan (KKK) business card.

Sokoloff wrote a two-page letter in response to the article in which he accused Niman of having done no background research and spoke of his "disregard for objective facts and its reliance on biased and purposefully misleading statements and outright lies."

He also suggested that Niman speak with any of Ellis' three fired attorneys who withdrew following "threats from her family."

Sokoloff goes on to state that one officer allegedly received a split lip from a "punch thrown by the 'innocent' Ms. Ellis."

In his defense, Sokoloff said in a written statement, that "over the last several months, the defendant and her supporters have made a concerted attempt, through the traditional media and the internet, to portray me as an overly aggressive and racially biased prosecutor."

"They have distorted the facts and my record to try to divert the public's attention from her (Heather Ellis') conduct," Sokoloff alleged.

Anyone who went to Planned Parenthood for their care? [10 Nov 2009|10:56pm]

pregnant

[all_is_beauty]
[ mood | depressed ]

So, getting insurance is a nightmare, especially if you are a pregnant lady. I've applied for pregnancy-only Medi-Cal twice, and tried follow-up calls, and still nothing. So my assumption is that either I will not get Medi-Cal, or they're taking their sweet old time.

In other words, I'm 15w exactly today, and I am in dire need of seeing someone for prenatal care. The free clinic in my area that my mom referred me to does not return my calls, so they are definitely out of the picture.

The only other option that I know of is Planned Parenthood. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'm kind of dead in the water here.

My question is, is there anyone else here that went to Planned Parenthood for part or all of their prenatal care? What were your experiences like? Did you have a good relationship with your doctor(s)? Any suggestions on what to expect? I'm hoping to make an appointment tomorrow or Thursday, but I need to get on this; it has been put off for far too long in hopes that the Medi-Cal would go through, and I am tired of waiting and risking serious issues.

ALSO: Under the cut are belly pictures! :D I'm curious to see how far along you guys think I am. This was a shot after a decent meal and plenty of water, but it's still not too far from how big my belly currently is.

Belly belly belly... )

Thanks in advance.

Pants off to impropriety! [11 Nov 2009|12:37am]

[paulnolan]
[ music | Hitoshi Sakimoto - The Princess' Vision | Powered by Last.fm ]

After yet another week in which women's bodies have been used as bargaining chips to trade liberal reforms with the American centre-right, our choices denigrated and our self-expression questioned, politicised and ridiculed, I want to shout out for an unsung hero of improper, joyful, self-actualising women everywhere: Knickers Girl.

When a Sun photographer snapped Knickers Girl - aka 20 year old teaching assistant Sarah Lyons -cavorting in Cardiff centre with a pair of pants around her ankles, she instantly became the face of female reprobation up and down the country. Never mind that she wasn't exposing any naughty bits; never mind that dancing with a pair of knickers around your ankles is perfectly legal behaviour; never mind that the pants in question weren't the ones she'd been wearing, but a comedy pair of David Hasselhof knickers a mate had picked up in a bar. Never mind that poor Ms Lyons was on a course of antibiotics and hence was actually stone-cold sober at the time: the new postergirl of binge-drinking ladettes everywhere has been suspended from her job pending a disciplinary inquiry, for the dubious crime of having fun in public. And they say sexism in the workplace is dead.

A reminder: this is The Sun we're talking about. The Sun, whose page three 'news in briefs' section features topless glamour models every single day. The Sun, whose problem with women dancing in their pants in public only extends to those of us who aren't getting paid to perform for the male gaze like good little tarts.

Knickers girl also has a starring role to play in the latest rotten misogynist egg Quentin Letts has laid in the Mail, although Letts has to satisfy himself with a slavering description of the picture, as the Sun is damned if it's going to share the rights to such a juicy piece of moral propaganda. In his article, Letts blames feminism - and Germaine Greer in particular - for spawning 'an entire generation of loose-knickered lady louts'.

"British girls have become fat-faced 'ladettes', goose pimples rising on the skin of their exposed thighs as they clack-clack-clack along the pavement en route to the weekend disco, destination bonk...Older generations would call these women 'slappers' - and they would be right."

Not satisfied with fat-shaming, mocking women's bodies and clothes and branding us slags for any attempt to own our own sexual desire, Quentin goes on to tell eager readers that today's ladettes "have lost the centuries-old idea of being demure in public. The sort of slender-lipped, self-questioning, hesitant lover played by Celia Johnson in David Lean's 1945 film Brief Encounter is now found only in recently arrived immigrant families."

Yes, this is the same Quentin Letts, writing for the same newspaper that regularly shames Muslim women for choosing to wear the veil. Clearly, signifiers of female modesty and social repression are fine and dandy as long as they're not foreign.

Woman shaves head to raise leukemia awareness and receives the ban hammer: [11 Nov 2009|12:21am]

Mount Alvernia College bans girl for shaving head

November 09, 2009 07:05pm

A 15-YEAR-old Brisbane school girl has been suspended for shaving her head to raise money for vital cancer research.

Emily Pridham and her family told Channel Nine News her father is battling leukemia.

He underwent a bone marrow transplant a few weeks ago but has been given only a few months to live.

Ms Pridham decided to shave her head as part of a fundraiser for cancer research.

"Basically my way of coping is to try and help other people going through the same thing," she said.

Ms Pridham said she has been banned from Mount Alvernia College until her hair grows back.

Barbara Pridham said she supports her daughter's fundraising decision.

"I am just appalled that she could be suspended by a Catholic school that promotes joy, respect and community spirit," she said.

Mount Alvernia College released a statement to Channel Nine News that said Ms Pridham had breached the college's uniform guidelines and had been suspended because of "ongoing issues".

By Tuesday morning, Ms Pridham had established a Facebook group to support her and was quickly gathering members.

She said on the page: "My inbox and Facebook wall are overflowing with messages of support. I Love my MAC girls, and thanks for standing behind me, It realy shows that in times of need the girls will always stick together .."
